Hypertension Care Cascade

Hypertension poses a great risk for heart and blood vessels health. Although two thirds of the Hypertension burden is in low-and-middle-income countries, limited data exists in this context on how patients move from being diagnosed with Hypertension and having the disease controlled.

Newlands Clinic sought to understand the Hypertension care cascade, including prevalence, awareness, to treatment among HIV-positive and HIV-negative adults. Data was collected in urban Zambia and Zimbabwe between August 2019 and April 2022.

The results showed a high prevalence of elevated blood pressure and Hypertension among adults. Furthermore, our team identified gaps in diagnosing and referring patient further for treatment. The identified factors associated with Hypertension including an older age (>50years) highlight the potential benefit for targeted screening of these high-risk groups.
